Hanging in our gallery a selection of over 30 spectacular images from this talented photographer. Below are a selection of what's on show in our gallery in Malvern.

Moira’s images are filled with compassion for her subjects and an innate love for the natural surroundings.  Even in areas of poverty and hardship, Moira has a profound gift for extracting great optimism. Very little editing is done to the images, with only a number being cropped and some with exposure settings changed. This is where her love for documentary photography comes in, seeing it and presenting it as it is.

Artist's Details and cause of inspiration

MOIRA LAWSON

Born in Australia and raised in South Africa, Moira’s interest in photography first started while watching her brother work as a professional photographer. In her early twenties she returned to Melbourne where she studied and worked in the music industry for a number of years, then various careers such as a production coordinator, office manager and rehab care worker.

In 2003 she left Australia to undertake voluntary work overseas and bought her first digital camera to document the journey. It was on this trip that her passion for photography took hold. Moira’s love for experiencing and learning about other cultures saw her travel to unique places; her camera became an extension of herself and a way of telling the story. Her brother encouraged her to submit an article with images to a popular digital camera magazine. It was the first of many articles, which highlighted her natural ability in photojournalism. The next five years saw her travelling to many overseas locations in her role as a Travel Feature Editor for the magazine, whilst also working in documentary film for television in Ireland.

Moira’s voluntary work includes taking images for campaigns and assisting in care and language programs in Third World countries. This work has seen her capture numerous images for Concern Worldwide, working alongside some of the top dignitaries such as Kofi Annan (7th Secretary General to the United Nations), and Mary MacAleese and Mary Robinson (former Irish Presidents).

Since then her photography has taken her across 7 Continents in 10 years. From exploring emerald mines in Columbia to diving with great white sharks in South Africa, from research stations in the Antarctic to orphans in South America, Moira’s images involve us in her journey.

The title LIFE IN FOCUS has a very personal meaning to Moira, as she was unable to walk for almost 6 months the year before last due to an accident. It made her realise how integral photography was to her life and how she had lost focus while not being able to do what she loves.

The exhibition has allowed Moira to revisit her work and reflect her adventures so far. An important part of the project was to return to St Kilda, the start of her journey, to launch the exhibition. There are already plans to tour the exhibition internationally. Meanwhile, Moira is back behind the camera and planning her next overseas adventure.
