Design of Custom Framing

90% of picture framing design

requires just 4 choices ...

When we first started in the picture framing industry I had a sample board of 6 frames. Life was simple. We always kept those frames in stock and could have the framing job ready within a few days, then the industry exploded and now there are thousands of frame and product choices, and we have earned a name in the game for offering well over a thousand frame and mat choices including beautiful handcrafted Italian frames.

Even so, most customers just want a simple frame and mat. The 4 choices being, Black, White or Natural Wood (Oak) frames and usually a white mat which you can see above works just fine.

Ah but what about those few who want something else? I've designed some framing ideas shown below with notes to help our customers consider other options. I'd like to think my framing design skills are superior to my photographic and computer related skills, but I'll let you decide. Warm regards, Bernie and the Print Decor Design Team.

#1. Framed print with deep blue suede (fabric) mat board.

Gold and Brass frames have made a spectacular comeback recently and are giving black, white and oak frames a run for their money. This framed print has a soft gold art deco frame, a deep blue suede mat that has texture that only suede can offer and the inner edge of the mat has a gold "fillet" which is a small frame that helps offset the image and synchronises with the outer gold frame.

#2. Opulent gold frame.

I'm sure Vincent Van Gogh would smile seeing his beautiful work framed in such a way.

Part of our extensive opulent Gold and Silver selections of frames sourced from the finest European artisan frame makers. It includes the Italian handcrafted Bellini range.

#3. Modern abstract art print with 4 coloured mats contributing to the story.

Oh the joys of playing with colour. The high gloss outer mat pushes this modern abstract (by Hundertwasser) further into the contemporary realm. The magenta, fluro green and yellow, I think, are an acknowledgement of the playfulness of bright bold colour. The inner mats were stepped in size and my reason for that (aside from showing that we can) is to give this piece a somewhat architectural feel. This is also taken a little further by raising the yellow mat 3 mm above the image.

Details of multiple mat board options

The frame is hard to see, but it has a tapered profile, again giving a geometric / architectural feel to this modern art.

#4. Iconic advertising poster framed with red and black mats and a classy Italian black frame with gold edging.

#5. Print The Kiss by Gustav Klimt in white box

frame and orange mat insert

Fortunately I photographed this one before someone came and bought it.

It has no mat board in the normal use, the orange around the edge of the print is orange mat that actually lines the inside of the box frame.

Brilliant, innovative, oh please! I got the idea from an ad for an art show .. well at least I'm being honest :)
