Behind the scenes, inside the framing workshop

Lynne and our lovely lead framer Janina stand next to the largest Mat Cutting Machine in Australia. (Mats are the decorative and protective cardboard boarder surrounding the art work.) See our framing tips and examples to find out more about matting and its relevance to picture framing. (click here >>>)

Not only can this machine cut cardboard borders for picture framing as wide as (approx) 250 x 122 cm but it also cuts 9mm particle board (MDF) up to the same size! But there's more folks, this machine also cuts Perspex and glass/mirror and can photograph an image and etch that into the Perspex, glass, mirror, cardboard or MDF.

I think it can do a whole lot of other stuff too...but we haven't finished reading the manual yet!!
See if you can think of ways we can use our new toy, we'd appreciate some ideas.

Care factor (above.)

A vital factor in framing conservation are the professional standards set by the framers in their attitude and pride in undertaking the task. We are happy to work with responsible, caring picture framers using the latest precision equipment.

The Department of Slicing and Joining

Above is the "double mitre drop saw" from hell. It has 2 very powerful motors with precision saw blades fitted. When the powerful motors are started the frame of virtually any size is cut by each of these saw blades at  a 45 degree angle (mitre.) The result is a perfectly cut frame which is joined with an under pinning machine that presses V shaped nails through the back of the mitred frame pieces.

Frame joining

This machine is the under pinning or V nailing machine that presses V shaped nails into the mitred frame to join it.
