Painted in 1956, 'Dreaming Alice' is a part of Charles Blackman's renowned Alice in Wonderland series.

Featuring Lewis Carroll’s Alice, the scene alludes to Blackman’s then wife and muse, Barbara, in whom he recognised Alice. Eyes closed and blissfully unaware of the swirling world around her, Blackman’s Alice is suspended weightless beside swelling flowers - a symbol of his wife’s pregnancy, lost between worlds.
